NuCore Old Barn Oak Luxury Vinyl Plank

★★★★★4.8· thousands of reviews

Old Barn Oak captures the weathered beauty of reclaimed barn wood in a 100% waterproof luxury vinyl plank. Each plank features deep embossing that follows the grain pattern, hand-scraped texture variations, and authentic knot details that mirror aged hardwood recovered from century-old structures.

We engineered this collection for families who want rustic character without the maintenance concerns of real reclaimed wood. The rigid core construction provides commercial-grade stability in basements, kitchens, and bathrooms where moisture would damage traditional hardwood. Our attached foam underlayment reduces noise transmission and adds cushioned comfort underfoot in busy living spaces.

Authentic reclaimed wood appearance

Old Barn Oak replicates the visual depth of salvaged barn lumber through multi-tonal color blending and strategic knot placement. We photographed actual reclaimed oak boards to create the visual layer, then added random plank variation so no two pieces repeat within typical room installations.

The hand-scraped surface texture follows the wood grain direction with deeper channels around knots and natural checking patterns. Wire brushing highlights the grain peaks while recessed areas show darker staining that mimics decades of weathering. This attention to dimensional detail creates shadow lines that shift with room lighting just like authentic wide-plank barn wood.

Waterproof rigid core technology

Core composition

Our rigid core combines virgin vinyl resin with limestone powder in a high-density composite that resists expansion and contraction. This stability allows Old Barn Oak installation over concrete slabs, radiant heat systems, and existing flooring without transition strips in openings up to 50 feet. The waterproof construction makes it ideal for finished basements and laundry rooms where traditional luxury vinyl plank options might require additional moisture barriers.

Underlayment system

We permanently bond 1.5mm cross-linked polyethylene foam to every plank during manufacturing. This integrated underlayment eliminates the need to purchase and roll out separate padding, while the closed-cell structure blocks moisture transmission from concrete subfloors. The foam compression rating supports commercial foot traffic without permanent indentation under furniture legs or appliance weight.

Styling

Installation requirements & preparation

Old Barn Oak installs as a floating floor using our Quick-Lock edge system that angles and drops into place without adhesive. Subfloors must be clean, level within 3/16″ over 10 feet, and structurally sound. We recommend acclimating cartons in the installation room for 48 hours at temperatures between 65-85°F.

The planks require a 1/4″ expansion gap at all vertical surfaces including walls, cabinets, and door casings. Use spacers during installation to maintain consistent perimeter gaps, then cover with quarter-round or flush base molding. The floating system allows for removal and reinstallation if you relocate or want to refinish concrete underneath.

Perfect barn wood look without the splinters
I wanted the character of reclaimed wood in our living room but didn't want the maintenance headaches. Old Barn Oak delivered exactly that rustic appearance with the waterproof protection we needed near the patio door. The texture feels authentic underfoot and guests always ask if it's real reclaimed lumber.

Held up perfectly in our mudroom
We installed this in our mudroom and kitchen two years ago and it still looks brand new despite constant traffic from our three kids and two dogs. The waterproof feature has been a lifesaver with spilled water bowls and tracked-in snow. Installation was straightforward even for my first DIY flooring project.

Great over concrete basement floor
Our basement stays cool and sometimes damp, so we needed something that could handle moisture. Old Barn Oak installed easily over the concrete slab and the attached padding makes it comfortable to walk on. The color variation between planks creates that authentic barn wood randomness I was hoping for.

Beautiful texture and depth
The hand-scraped texture and grain detail really do look like old barn wood. I appreciated the realistic knots and color shifts that make each plank unique. The only minor issue was needing to order extra boxes to find enough planks with the deeper distressing I wanted for my feature wall installation.

Easy installation for rental property
I manage several rental units and needed durable flooring that could handle tenant turnover. Old Barn Oak installed quickly in three bedrooms and looks high-end enough to justify our rental rates. The waterproof feature means I don't worry about bathroom overflow or pet accidents damaging the flooring.

Warmer underfoot than expected
We replaced ceramic tile with Old Barn Oak in our kitchen and the difference in comfort is remarkable. The foam underlayment makes standing at the counter much easier on my feet and back. The rustic oak appearance ties our open floor plan together beautifully with our dining room furniture.

Good to know

Old Barn Oak flooring questions

Yes, the 100% waterproof rigid core construction makes Old Barn Oak suitable for full bathroom installations including around toilets, tubs, and shower enclosures. The waterproof protection extends through the entire plank thickness, not just a surface coating. Maintain the required 1/4" expansion gap at all walls and use 100% silicone caulk where flooring meets tub or shower bases to prevent water migration underneath.

Old Barn Oak is compatible with radiant heat systems when surface temperatures remain below 85°F. The rigid core construction maintains dimensional stability better than traditional vinyl or laminate over heated subfloors. We recommend installing a floor temperature sensor to monitor heat levels and prevent exceeding the maximum temperature threshold that could affect the adhesive bond in the underlayment layer.

Old Barn Oak installs over concrete, plywood, OSB, existing vinyl, and ceramic tile when surfaces meet our flatness requirements. Subfloors must be structurally sound, clean, dry, and level within 3/16" over any 10-foot span. Remove carpet and padding before installation. High-low transitions exceeding our flatness tolerance require grinding or leveling compound application to prevent joint stress and potential plank separation.

The texture channels are shallow enough for standard vacuum and damp mopping to clean effectively without special tools. Regular sweeping or vacuuming prevents dirt accumulation in recessed areas. For deeper periodic cleaning, use a soft-bristle brush with pH-neutral vinyl cleaner to agitate the textured surface, then rinse with a damp mop. The texture depth enhances realism without creating cleaning challenges in normal household conditions.

The Quick-Lock installation system is designed for confident DIY installers with basic tools including a utility knife, tape measure, spacers, and tapping block. Most homeowners complete 500 square feet in a weekend. Professional installation ensures warranty compliance if you're uncertain about subfloor preparation or working around complex room layouts. Review our installation video library before deciding whether to tackle the project yourself.

Each carton of Old Barn Oak contains 23.64 square feet across eight planks measuring 7.25 inches wide by 48 inches long. Calculate your room square footage and add 10% for cutting waste and future repairs. Order all cartons from the same production lot to ensure consistent color matching, as natural variation occurs between manufacturing runs even within the same product line.

The attached IXPE foam has a compression rating that supports typical residential furniture loads without permanent indentation. Use furniture coasters or felt pads to distribute weight over a larger surface area under especially heavy items like gun safes, pianos, or fully loaded bookcases. Avoid rolling appliances across the floor during installation or remodeling projects, as concentrated wheel pressure can create temporary or permanent compression marks in the underlayment.
